Albert Dock
a Liverpool poem

Reclaimed brickwork freshly pointed
trendy apartments unreal estate
colonnades of teddy bears funny balloons
decorative lighting it's frightening

Gran holds the pram as mum buys
bargain books ticky tacky bric-a-brac
sugary drinks
Gary Linacre flavour crisps
aerial photos of the Kop
Teenagers in this year's strip cop off
Here There and Everywhere it's Yesterday
John and Yoko grin
two rich Cheshire cats

Roll up for the marginal history tour
tasteful black and white prints of
tall ships and small people
Africans in rags and chains
artfully artificial museums without
the stink of sweat, tar and rat shit

Couples chat sophisticatedly
over - priced coffee
like Richard and Judy who left in a huff
leaving the mini Irish sea gunked
with green slime and coke cans
now that Fred the weather man
doesn't hop from shore to
polystyrene shore anymore.

But ah. It's lovely innit.
